Ai Kumehara

Ai Kumehara is a prominent Japanese contemporary artist and painter, born in Saitama Prefecture in 1989 and currently based in Nagano Prefecture. She is widely recognised for her distinctive reinterpretation of Nihonga, or traditional Japanese painting, through a highly personal technique that creates poetic, atmospheric, and softly layered pictorial spaces.

Her practice combines traditional Japanese materials with her own contemporary sensibility. She begins by applying highly transparent pigments to establish the underlying composition, then repeatedly layers thin sheets of Japanese washi paper with natural mineral pigments, known as iwa-enogu. Through this meticulous process of superimposition, her paintings acquire a mist-like softness, subtle spatial depth, and a quiet richness of colour.

Education

Kumehara completed her Master’s degree in Japanese Painting at Tama Art University Graduate School in 2015.

Themes and Subject Matter

Kumehara’s work frequently explores the relationship between landscapes of the past and present, with particular attention to natural environments shaped by human intervention, including gardens, nature reserves, and satoyama landscapes.

In her more recent works, young female figures and animals often appear within dreamlike settings, forming imaginative and poetic worlds in which human presence, memory, and nature coexist.

Museum Exhibitions and Institutional Recognition

In recent years, Ai Kumehara has established a substantial exhibition and award record across museums and public art institutions in Japan and internationally. Her contemporary interpretation of Nihonga has been presented at major Japanese cultural institutions, while overseas residencies, institutional exhibitions, public collections, and international art fairs have gradually expanded the international reach of her practice.

Sapporo Art Museum, Japan

In 2026, Kumehara was invited to participate in the Sapporo Art Park 40th Anniversary exhibition Flowing Garden: Flowers and Beasts, Colors and Forms, alongside prominent artists including Mika Ninagawa. The exhibition presented significant works created between 2018 and 2020, including pieces from her garden-related series and works reflecting on animals and changing environments during the pandemic period, such as Utakata no Niwa.

The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo

Kumehara received an Excellence Award at the 34th Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition in 2016. In 2018, she presented the solo exhibition Utakata no Niwa (The Ephemeral Garden) at the museum gallery, marking an important milestone in the development of her artistic career and establishing her position within contemporary Japanese painting.

In 2020, she was invited to participate in the museum’s group exhibition Victory Bouquet Exhibition.

International and Academic Institutional Presence

Funen Art Academy, Denmark

In 2019, Kumehara received the Young Artist Overseas Training Grant from the Yoshino Gypsum Art Foundation. She subsequently undertook research and residency activities in a Danish nature reserve.

In 2020, she presented the solo exhibition Sono Mukou no Kehai at Funen Art Academy in Denmark. This experience marked an important stage in her practice, allowing her to translate European landscapes and natural environments into her distinctive visual language of layered washi, mineral pigments, and atmospheric abstraction.

Yunjian Art Museum, Shanghai, China

Kumehara’s works have also been exhibited in China, and her work has entered the permanent collection of Yunjian Art Museum in Shanghai, reflecting the growing recognition of her practice within a broader Asian and cross-cultural context.
