Zhuang Hong Yi

b.1962 China

Zhuang Hong Yi is a Chinese born, contemporary artist whose work represents beauty, sophistication and a high level of perfection with a clear presence of Chinese influence represented in his use of colors, themes, shapes and materials that touch the heart. Evident throughout Zhuang’s work is his Chinese background, which is gracefully entwined with a strong Western allure.

This is undoubtedly the result of his upbringing and education in China and the Western European experience and inspiration he has gained since 1990, upon moving to the Netherlands. Even after many years of residence in Europe, Zhuang still holds a studio in Beijing, China, where he returns a couple of times a year to work, collect new materials and to get inspiration.

Since moving to Western Europe in the early nineties Zhuang Hong Yi’s style has continuously developed. His work exists in many different forms and shapes, but also in a variety of materials and sizes. Zhuang Hong Yi has made paintings with ink, mixed traditional Chinese materials like acrylic and oil paint and rice paper. A daring and surprising mix of bright colors very often characterizes Zhuang’s paintings.

Zhuang’s work is built upon his native country’s well-established artistic traditions and boundaries, which he has married with the Netherlands’ encouragement of freedom of style. Embracing his present without losing his past and he is attempting to define a sense of self that exists between the two. This is the personal struggle that Zhuang enacts visually and through his artistic process, which vacillates between phases of controlled planning, emotional gesture, and careful editing. The result is objects of appealing beauty, mysterious and alluring—at once both foreign and familiar.

Zhuang Hong Yi has exhibited in China, USA and throughout Europe including Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy and The UK. He has been the subject of multiple museum exhibitions at Groninger Museum in the Netherlands and his work is held in numerous esteemed public and private collections worldwide.
